I’ve mentored dozens of Engineering Leaders

One of the top recommended mentors from The Pragmatic Engineer . I’ve specialised in supporting technical founders and newly promoted directors primarily based in the UK and US, who are taking the step up to group leadership.

“ Ed used his experience to challenge my thinking, ask the difficult questions, and help me get clear on what great leadership really looks like”

James Hewett - Engineering Director @Clearbank, ex-Monzo

“I couldn't have asked for a better coach or mentor to guide me through the minefield of senior leadership.”

Phil Clamp - Senior Manager @Natwest Boxed

I’ve driven change quickly as a fractional leader

As an exited founder and multi-time startup leader, I get the need for pace. In fractional roles I’ve assumed real ownership, working with leaders and engineers to quickly identify and action gaps or opportunities to drive up effectiveness.

This has included:

  • Surfacing and actioning performance challenges
  • Accelerating the hiring of top talent into critical roles
  • Leading the delivery of key projects to hit timelines
  • Defining and driving technical strategy
  • Mentoring and growing technical leaders to build sustained change

How I work

I typically assume one of three roles, with flexible transition always possible between them subject to availability:

Consultant

1-3 Months

Brought in on a short term basis to quickly resolve a specific concern (hiring, performance management , retention, team velocity etc)

Acting HoE / VP

~6-9 months

Brought in to work alongside technical CTO’s as a team-focussed leader. You don’t need a full time VP yet, you just need an injection of VP support while you grow.

Interim CTO

9+ Months

It can take months-to-years to hire the right CTO. I can act as a quick and effective stopgap, able to fulfil all necessary roles while supporting this key hire.

Example Case:

I initially joined Birdie as a consultant, brought in to help accelerate the pace of the team and unblock a critical project. Soon after a joining, a key Engineering Leader departed the business and I subsequently took on the interim CTO role.
